Women in Physics in South Africa: Are We There Yet?, Iyabo UsmanPhysics lecturer and researcher Iyabo Usman discusses the challenges to achieving gender equality in physics education and careers.
Research has shown that a nation’s rapid socio-economic development depends on the caliber of its women. In Africa, it’s challenging for women to obtain the same education as their male counterparts; especially in science careers. Social influences, religious and cultural beliefs, and political and economic problems all hinder their success. One national initiative to help increase the number of women in science is Women in Physics in South Africa (WiPiSA). Each year, WiPiSA awards grants to female academics to boost undergraduate students’ interest in physics careers. Iyabo Usman argues that a few significant changes in attitude and behaviour might mend a broken academic system, stopping the loss of dozens of talented women and fortifying our scientific leadership with new blood.
