High performance ultrafast optics for the UV spectral region

Industrial project partner: Thin Film Physics AG - Fulvio JacocagniThe ultrafast laser market is in constant growth both in industry and research. Today most systems operate in the near-infrared spectral region, but moving towards shorter wavelength in the UV spectral region will become more and more attractive both for novel scientific and industrial applications. However, the available ultrafast optical components are strongly limited at theses wavelengths, which is a critical challenge. Coatings in the UV are challenging and one of the most critical issues is damage. In particular, dispersive optics that can withstand high optical peak power are needed for ultrashort pulse compression in the UV. They are poorly available today and we will explore the feasibility of a novel class of mirrors that have the potential to expand the product portfolio of Thin Film Physics to a new market that is currently not addressed in Switzerland. We expect that the project will lead to several first proof-of-principle demonstrations, which then can be addressed in a follow-up project.
