Patents: Urgent cases
In order to ease the conflict of publishing vs patenting we recommend that, if in doubt, apply for a provisional US patent application.
A provisional US patent application can be done as little as 24hrs prior to publication, or talk, and one has one year to file a patent (US or PCT(with 2.5 years of time in selected countries)). For advice on this, please contact as early as possible Ch. Harder (+41 79 219 9051 email ).

Patents: Non urgent cases
If you want to protect your invention with a patent and time is not limited by the desire to make a publication, then you must do a search for prior patents, and carefully write your new patent. The search for prior patents can be costly, but you can get help:
- Search yourself for proir art. Patent databases are open access, e.g. search US patent database (link), European patent database (link), Swiss patent office (link) or Deutsches Patentamt (link)
- IPI Bern (8hr patent search for CHF 300.-), contact Heinz Müller (+41 31 377 73 68 , email)
- A patent application in Germany (€410) which delivers to you, in addition, a detailed research report with respect to prior art
The vastly different needs of the NCCR MUST community will be covered also on an individual basis by local seminars and by individual consulting (contact: Ch. Harder +41 79 219 9051 email).
