Support for start-ups
Start-ups and researchers interested in starting their own business are supported by many different organisations. The lists below are far from complete: if you miss an important entry, we're glad to add it.By the way: the NCCR MUST provides financial support if you wish to take part in a start-up workshop: please contact us!
MUST partner institutes each have their own support structures for the development of new technologies.
- ETH Transfer supports the development of (pre)-commercial technology, e.g. with the Pioneer Fellowship
- ieLab (ETH) supports young entrepreneurs with a wide range of services
- Innogrants, an EPFL initiative, which financed more than 80 teams and helped to create 50+ start-ups. These start-ups subsequently received more than CHF 100M in additional grants and equity
- Unitectra supports scientists at the Universities of Basel, Zürich and Bern in their collaborations with industry involving commercialization of research results and contractual matters, and in the creation of start-up companies
- be advanced is the main platform in the Canton of Berne preparing high-tech startups from industry and academia for take-off.
- Basel Inkubator enables young entrepreneurs from the field of natural sciences, medicine, information technology or engineering technology to make their first steps in creating their start-up. It is a joint initiative of the University of Basel, the FHNW, the "ErfindungsVerwertung AG EVA" and the canton Basel-Stadt
- Unitec is the Technology Transfer office of the Université de Genève
- UniNE Entrepreneurship supports the creation of new ventures based on University research and will assist the promoters of these projects along the way through its Technology Transfer Office (TTO)
- The PSI Transfer Office offers a a comprehensive range of Research- and Development-Services. A new Innovation Park: Innovaare, will be established close to the large scale accelerator and research facilities available at the Paul Scherrer Institute.
Swiss organisations and initiatives:
- startupinvest is the Leading Financing Platform for Swiss High-Tech Start-ups
- Venture, is an initiative of the ETH Zurich, Knecht Holding, the innovation promotion agency CTI and McKinsey & Company, Switzerland (bi-annual competition), which supports young entrepreneurs in founding a company.
- Gruenden.ch is a resource for people considering self-employment and wanting to set up their own company
- Startupticker.ch is the online news platform for young entrepreneurs, innovators and supporters. The hub increases the visibility of young Swiss companies and serves to highlight the diverse and vibrant start-up scene.
- EasyGov is a service offered by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) to facilitate and simplify the creation of new businesses in Switzerland.
Prizes and awards for start-up companies
- Jungunternehmerpreise (in German), a list of almost 20 different prizes and awards for starting entrepreneurs
- Venture kick, CHF 130'000 for the best start-up idea
- Swiss Startups Awards, CHF 50'000 for the four best ideas
- INNOGAP was created by Unitec (UniGE) as a proof-of-principle fund to help researchers at UNIGE and HUG to move their research discoveries toward practical implementation (five grants per year of up to CHF 30'000)
- The Swiss Federal Foundation for Promotion of the National Economy through Scientific Research, or "Volkswirtschaft Stiftung", fund newly founded technology firms with a onetime interest-free loan of up to 150’000 Swiss Francs
Private companies specialized in company foundations
- STARTUPS.CH is a NEXUS-owned company, which focusses on company foundations, and assists you in starting a GmbH, AG, sole enterprise or limited partnership
- LeanStart, supports start-up in their initial steps
Workshops for high-tech ideas that may turn into start-up companies:
- for example the Neworks pre-seed workshop organised in Switzerland by SwissCompanyMaker
- Startup Weekend Schweiz is a network of passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, teams and communities. Come share ideas, form teams, and launch startups. It organizes regular weekend workshops (6 in 2015)
- Venturelab workshops and circles bring together selected startup talents through a structured stress test of their entrepreneurial and business readiness, enhancing their entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, and connect them to the community of high value adding founders, mentors and industry experts.
